What to Prepare Before Publishing a Website

A practical website checklist · 6 minute read

A website is more useful when visitors can understand what it offers, find the information they need, and contact the person responsible for it. Before launch, focus on clarity and reliability rather than adding every possible feature.

Explain the purpose clearly

The homepage should tell visitors what the site is about and who it serves. Use a descriptive title, a short introduction, and links to the most useful pages. Avoid generic pages that provide little information or promise results the site cannot deliver.

Publish genuinely helpful content

Write for people who have a real question. A useful article should explain the topic in enough detail to help the reader take the next step, include examples where appropriate, and distinguish general information from professional advice. Check facts, correct errors, and avoid copying content from other sites.

There is no universal article count that guarantees search visibility or advertising approval. Quality, originality, usability, and compliance with the relevant platform policies matter more than publishing many thin pages.

Make navigation predictable

Use familiar labels for the homepage, main categories, about page, and contact page. Make sure links work, headings follow a sensible order, and pages remain readable on mobile devices. Check image sizes and loading speed, and provide meaningful alternative text for informative images.

Add accurate site information

An About page should explain the site’s purpose and who creates its content. A Contact page should provide a working contact method. Publish privacy information that accurately reflects the data your site collects and the services it uses. Terms and disclaimers should be relevant to your site rather than copied blindly from another publisher.

Check technical basics

  • Use a secure HTTPS connection when your host supports it.
  • Check for broken links and missing images.
  • Set descriptive page titles and meta descriptions.
  • Make sure pages work on a phone and desktop.
  • Use readable contrast, font sizes, and clear headings.
  • Keep backups and update software where applicable.

Prepare for advertising responsibly

If you plan to use an advertising network, read its current publisher policies and eligibility requirements. Do not click your own ads, encourage visitors to click ads, buy fake traffic, or place ads in ways that could confuse visitors. Do not add ad code until your account and site setup are ready, and ensure any required consent and privacy notices are appropriate for your audience and location.

Advertising approval is never guaranteed by a checklist or template. Review the official requirements, respond honestly to application questions, and fix any issues identified by the provider.

Final check: Ask someone unfamiliar with the site to find an article, understand what the site offers, and contact you. Their confusion is a useful signal for what to improve.
